Managing Director
Reporting to the BC Hydro’s Vice President of Technology and Security, and the Powertech Board of Directors, the Managing Director will guide the growth and direction of Powertech Labs, an award-winning energy research and development centre specializing in clean energy consulting, testing and power solutions. This role will lead the Powertech Management Team to refine its forward-looking strategic plan and to develop an annual business plan, including operational plans, capital plans, financial performance reporting, and other supporting initiatives.

Duties:
We are looking for a values-based leader to foster a corporate culture of innovation and teamwork that also promotes ethical practices and encourages individual integrity and social responsibility. Areas of responsibility include:
- Participation in the overall leadership of Powertech in a manner that enables the achievement of financial, strategic and operational goals.
- Leads the development of a strategic plan to identify key strategic issues that need to be addressed, establish short, medium and long-term objectives, strategies and budgets, within the context of the direction set by BC Hydro’s Board of Directors and the economic development framework established by BC Hydro’s 5 year service plan and the provincial government.
- Ensures strategies to advance Powertech’s business development and leadership in areas such as Asset Management, Clean Transportation Engineering, Distributed Clean Power and Smart Utilities are developed and implemented.
- Leads the technological innovation and operations work of Powertech through your expertise and your teams.
- Provides leadership to all staff, promoting employee development, change management, succession planning and the building of diverse teams at an individual and organizational level, as per BC Hydro expectations.
- Provision of timely and relevant reporting and information to the Vice President, Technology, BC Hydro and the Powertech Board, as required.
- Ensuring a governance framework is maintained by seeking appropriate approvals for decisions, expenditures, revenue measures, leases or other actions or transactions falling outside the plans approved by the Powertech Board of Directors.
- Creates strategies to ensure Powertech’s continued achievement of competitive position within its industry and high standard for its products and services, and contribute to economic development for the province.
- Directs and monitors Powertech’s activities to ensure its assets are safeguarded and optimized, and to ensure the integrity of Powertech’s internal control and management systems.
- Demands and contributes to an environment that ensures the safety of themselves and others. Ensures the safe and efficient operation of Powertech, and complies with all corporate policies and practices, including those of BC Hydro applicable to Powertech.
Qualifications:
- A combined minimum of 15-plus years experience working at a senior management, director, vice-president level. Utility or energy industry and energy technology experience preferred.
- Business or engineering degree, MBA, MEng or equivalent business experience. Technology business development experience is an asset
- Has demonstrated an ability to be a highly effective member of a collaborative leadership team. Works well with others to achieve common goals; leads through collaboration.
- Team oriented, a team player with a natural leaning toward supporting and collaborating with colleagues across an organization. Willing to do what it takes to ensure the team is successful. Has experience in the technical field related to the energy business.
- Has developed leadership skills that consistently model alignment to Powertech & BC Hydro’s values of accountability, ingenuity, integrity, safety, service and teamwork, and Powertech’s additional value of innovation, and is able to contribute to the leadership of an organization to achieve its vision and goals in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Able to effectively communicate a vision and strategy and engage a broad range of people in the pursuit of corporate vision and goals, including board members, executives, senior government staff, professional and technical staff, as well as special interest groups.
- Generally understands the workings of government and the nuances and dynamics of functioning in a public sector environment, politically astute.
- Has developed and managed highly complex issues or projects through to conclusion in multi-party, regulated environments and has a demonstrated ability to conclude negotiations on time and within established mandates.
- A very strong stategic thinker who can work through complex situations, grasp concepts/issues and determine long term implications.
- Knows the industry through the eyes of the utility customers and suppliers; involved in recocognized standards and industry associations.
