Job Description:
Operations Manager
The Operations Manager will plan, direct and coordinate the hydroelectric operations of our client's BC hydro facilities. He/she is responsible for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability of the BC hydro operations through the provision of effective methods and strategies. He/she will also support development and construction of the company's new hydro facilities as required to ensure the successful commercial operation of those facilities.


Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
* Health & Safety – implement safety programs, procedures, and polices for the hydro group as a whole and for the individual projects. Monitor safety practices and compliance. Report safety statistics. Provide a safe and healthy working environment for employees and contractors.
* Environmental Compliance – ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Build and maintain a working environment that stresses environmental compliance and stewardship. Maintain compliance records, produce reports, and foster a good working relationship with governmental agencies.
* Coordination and Supervision - Coordinate, manage and monitor the BC hydro operations group.
* Financial - Review financial statements and data. Utilize financial data to improve profitability. Prepare and control operational budgets and models. Control inventory. Plan effective strategies for the financial well being of hydro operations.
* Best Practices - Improve processes and policies in support of organizational goals. Formulate and implement departmental, and organizational policies and procedures to maximize output. Monitor adherence to rules, regulations and procedures.
* Human Resources - Plan the use of human resources. Organize recruitment and placement of required staff. Establish organizational structures. Delegate tasks and accountabilities. Establish work schedules. Supervise staff. Monitor and evaluate performance.
* Production - Coordinate and monitor the work of various departments involved in production and environmental compliance. Monitor performance and implement improvements. Manage quality and quantity of employee productivity. Manage maintenance of equipment and machinery. Provide technical support where necessary.
* Communication - Monitor, manage and improve the efficiency of support services such as IT, HR, Accounts and Finance. Facilitate coordination and communication between support functions.
* Customer Relations - Manage customer relations including First Nation communication and BC Hydro liaison.
* Strategic Input - Liaison with top management. Assist in the development of strategic plans for operational activity. Implement and manage operational plans.

 

Education and Experience
The formal education and experience for the operations manager job description varies according to the nature of the job responsibilities. However the following are commonly required in the operations manager role.
* College degree in engineering, business management, or industrial technology.
* Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance experience
* Industry relevant production experience
* Knowledge and experience in organizational effectiveness and operations management

* Knowledge of financial and accounting principles and practices
* Knowledge of human resource principles and practices
* Knowledge of project management principles and practices
* Information technology skills

Requirements

*Ideally a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer

*Power operating experience, preferably Hydro and/or Run-of-River

*Good safety and environmental knowledge/experience

* Ability to work with hydro design and construction engineers to provide input for new plants.
