Clean Energy Association Welcomes Progress with Bioenergy Call
Vancouver, BC – The Clean Energy Association of BC (CEABC) welcomes news that BC Hydro has selected eight clean energy projects as preferred proponents to proceed to the next stage of the Bioenergy Phase 2 Call announced in November 2010.
”What is exciting for British Columbia is the hundreds of well paying jobs which will be created by the projects that are selected to receive an energy purchase contract,” said Paul Kariya, Executive Director of the CEABC. “Most of the bioenergy projects will create jobs and investment in rural and First Nations communities throughout the province.”
The eight projects represent 1,639 gigawatt hours (GWhs) per year of cost effective clean energy, enough to power 145,000 homes. BC Hydro’s goal is to secure 1,000 GWhs per year of energy from the Bioenergy Phase 2 Call to add to the 3,300 GWhs of energy it contracted through the Clean Power Call in 2010.
“Securing an energy purchase contract is a competitive process to ensure the best and most cost effective projects are selected,” Kariya notes “The eight preferred projects will now be rigorously reviewed and evaluated by BC Hydro.”
The sources of fuel for biomass projects come from sawmill residuals, roadside debris, logging slash, sort yard waste and standing timber such as pine beetle infested trees.
Through the Bioenergy Phase 2 Call, both BC Hydro and the BC government are following through on commitments in the Clean Energy Act to a clean energy future, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GhGs) and helping to power BC’s economic development.
CEABC is BC’s clean energy sector advocate. Its 320 members comprise developers and support services who provide clean energy from run-of-river hydro, wind, bio-mass and new emerging fuels. Working in partnership with First Nations, BC Hydro, provincial and federal governments and local communities, the clean energy sector is poised to contribute significantly to new jobs, capital expenditures and community investment.
