This year’s Clean Energy BC award recipients are:

  • Community of the Year Award: City of SurreyEnvironmental Stewardship Award: University of Northern British Columbia – Bioenergy Plant
  • Project Excellence Award: District of Lake Country - Hydroelectric Generating Station
  • Merit Award: Harvie Campbell
  • Merit Award: Jackie Hamilton

The City of Surrey is this year’s recipient of the Community of the Year Award. The city has been selected for this award in recognition of its leadership in many clean energy initiatives, including addressing transportation fuel alternatives to traditional fossil fuels and monitoring energy use consumption. The nominating committee was particularly impressed with the fact that the City of Surrey has developed a multi-disciplined clean energy game plan throughout the city. Mayor Dianne Watts will be accepting the award for the City of Surrey.

The Environmental Stewardship Award will be presented to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) for its innovative Bioenergy Plant. The Bioenergy Plant at UNBC is a logical extension of the University's mission to be responsive to northern communities. Located at the epicentre of Canada's largest forestry and bioenergy region, UNBC implemented its bioenergy project to serve as a platform for applied research and education. UNBC worked with BC-based Nexterra and local companies to implement the bioenergy system that is one the cleanest in North America. It will offset fossil fuel consumption on the Prince George campus by 85 per cent.

The Project Excellence Award will be presented to the District of Lake Country for its hydroelectric generating station. The District of Lake Country has been selected for this Award in recognition of its initiative and innovation in incorporating a hydro-generation plant into pre-existing infrastructure. This “waste not, want not” solution is a prime example of the local solutions-based leadership welcomed by Clean Energy BC’s Awards Nominating Committee.

A Merit Award will be presented to Harvie Campbell, Director and Officer of Western BioEnergy Inc. and past Chairman of the Clean Energy Association of BC. Over the last 30 years, Mr. Campbell has gained extensive experience in project development and mergers and acquisitions. He has played lead roles in the development of a number of power and international infrastructure projects including the Taylor NGL Project, the Fort Nelson Transmission Project, the McMahon, Lake Superior Power, Whitby, Puncakjaya, Island Cogeneration, Frederickson, East Windsor, Savona and 150 Mile House Power Projects. As past Chairman, he continues to provide leadership and guidance to Clean Energy BC.

A Merit Award will also be presented to Jackie Hamilton, past Chair of Clean Energy BC’s Hydro Committee. Ms. Hamilton gained her tremendous knowledge base in various BC government environmental assessment and regulatory management positions, and as a consultant, assisting with approvals and consultation for numerous major projects in BC. She has held various positions with Cloudworks since 1998, including Regulatory Advisor and Vice President. During her last year with Cloudworks, she focused on policy initiatives, including her work with Clean Energy BC.
